Title: Frontière(s)
Rating: 3/5
Genre: Horror
Starring: Karina Testa, Aurélien Wiik
Language: French
As a continuation with the horror theme, recommended by a fellow Lifer, this time I went with "Frontière(s)". To those who have been watching horror from a time now, they will notice that this is a lot similar to the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", without "Leatherface". A bunch of people on their way to Holland, they stop by a motel on the road to rest, motel is owned by crazy cannibals (Neo-Nazi's this rime), and then carnage begins. A decent horror film, not the best I've seen, but worth your while.
The acting was good in this film. Unlike many horror films where they actors are screaming, running around like idiots, and generally not convincing, I thoroughly enjoyed the role of "Yasmin" (Testa). It was convincing and emotional for the most part of the film. For the others, let's say they suffered and died well. Not to forget a well done acting of one crazy family. "Xavier Gens", the director and writer of the film, did a good job with direction. The amount of gore and bloody killings were appropriate, this didn't turn out to be a B-rated horror film. He did manage to bring us some emotional scenes that led the film's rating to rise, and these scenes weren't silly like with many horror films. The dining scenes were entertaining in a macabre way, which suited the film. I felt that "Gens" over killed some scenes in the film, and gave them more than they really deserved. Watching this film will tell you which. For instance, near the ending, the film transformed to an action shootout film. This really bothered me.
The writing of the film is probably the weakest aspect of the film. I saw many horror films clichés, from leaving the good weapons (pistol, rifle…) on the ground and running away to face the villain, the 3rd person shooter, to things like the villain returning back. The film was confusing at times. We don't know what the main message of the film is. Is it a political commentary? Is it a film about maternal connection and love? The film is vague about that. Not vague in a sense of mystery that we have to find out, but vague in confusing its message. It was predictable for the most part; we can obviously tell who's going to die and when. You're alone, you're at the bad guy's butchering place, you discovered something evil, you're screwed. There are other remarks on this film, but let's just stick with these for now.
This is isn't a bad film, slightly above average, and good to watch as a midnight film. It had the potential to be something greater, but "Gens" decided not to take chances with risking. It could have worked out well like with "Martyrs". Those who are into films like the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", especially the remake, will surely like this. Another good French horror film, not that great, but also not lame. It was a good watch.
