Title: Quarantine
Rating: 0.5/5
Genre: Horror
Starring: Jennifer Carpenter, Steve Harris, Jay Hernandez
Whether this film is dealt with as a remake of the Spanish film "REC", or just a regular zombie film, it failed to deliver a good experience. Basically the film makers decided to literally translate the original to English, and bring new actors. The changes that were done were mostly insignificant, and the biggest change, about the origin of the virus, leads us completely bewildered about many things. The acting is lame, just because you have the name "Carpenter" it doesn't mean you can make a horror film good. Overall the original is better by a lot.
The direction here, cinematography, and acting are just dull. The "shaky camera" style wasn't utilized as it should have been; even when there's no action at all the camera's motion is irritating. We sometimes wonder what kind of an idiot would hire a photographer like that. Chiefly, all the good parts that lets get tense in the original were ruined here. I still don't know why the big focus on Carpenter's face in the last seen, she is neither pretty nor is she talented. "John Erick Dowdle" did a really boring job as a director. To those who didn't see the original they might like it, but for people like I, we see that he did a copy-paste job for about 95% of the film. Even the way the zombies were killed, plot twists, and surprised are the same. He co-wrote the film. I honestly don't see why he wasted his time; a simple translator would have sufficed. Although the actors in the original, especially the main, weren't perfect but at least they were credible. Here "Carpenter" while in breathing in panic seemed as if she's in a porn film. The rest, well, let's just leave it at that.
I get if a remake is trying to be faithful to the original, but this is just ridiculous. I honestly don't know why someone would like to go and watch this while he/she can watch the original. "REC" ran for about 75 minutes, "Quarantine" ran for about 89 minutes. The best way to describe this is that "Quarantine" brought all the flaws of "REC" and made them bigger. Why couldn't they learn of remakes such as "Nosferatu the Vampyre" or "Cape Fear"?
Overall, the movie failed, and I did fall asleep. I had to rewatch some parts again so I can be sure that I gave it its right. A piece of advice, forget about this one and watch the original. Unless you are interested why I gave this film such a review, it isn't one of those films where you sit around and expect to be thrilled by it.
